History
With their colorful bills and tropical habitats, toucans are often associated with parrots. However, theyre actually more closely related to woodpeckers. These birds live in Central and South America and eat a diet that consists mostly of fruit. The purpose of their bills which can be almost half the length of their entire body is a bit of a mystery. It primarily appears to aid in thermoregulation, helping to control the animals body temperature. It also may help them reach nearby fruit without needing to expend a great deal of energy. They also use their bills for play-fighting with one another.
