History:
Sloths can be found in Central and South America, and are members of the order Pilosa, along with anteaters. Though todays sloths are all slow moving tree dwellers, prehistoric sloths were much larger and lived on the ground. The largest of these, Megatherium, could grow to be the size of an elephant. Today, most sloths are small enough to be easily held in a humans arms.
Of the six species of living sloths, most are considered Least Concern, meaning they are not in any immediate danger of extinction. Two species, however, the Pygmy Three-toed Sloth and the Maned Three-toed Sloth, are considered threatened.
