A nonvenomous species of snake native to North America, the rough green snake is sometimes colloquially referred to as the grass snake. It is remarkably docile and its bite, although rare, is harmless. Despite its calm personality, it is not commonly owned as a pet.
History:
Because it is both common and widespread throughout its endemic range, the rough green snake is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN. However, they are negatively affected by both pesticides and urban development. More specifically, the construction of roads in the rough green snakes natural habitat fragments its population and also puts them at danger when they are forced to cross.
