History
Meerkats have an incredibly complex social structure. They live in groups of up to 50, but only one pair breeds. The rest have several roles to ensure the young are able to survive. Some serve as sentries, watching out for birds and defending the groups territory. Some work as babysitters, caring for pups once they are able to leave their burrows. Others in the group teach the young how to hunt and deal with dangerous meals, such as scorpions. This cooperation gives the young the best chance of surviving.
