History

Because domestic cats appear in ancient Egyptian art earlier than in the records or artwork of other civilizations, archeologists assume they were first domesticated there. However, geneticists have added some assurance to the claim with a study that found todays domesticated cats descended from west Asian wild cats around 8,000 BC. This fits the Egyptian timeline, and the animals would certainly have been accessible.
