History:
Other than lions, giraffes dont have much to fear when they reach adulthood. Their height lets them see an ambush from far away, and their legs can deliver powerful kicks. Their necks are also formidable weapons, especially when male giraffes fight with each other for the affections of a female.
In 2016, the giraffe was reclassified from Least Concern to Vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Giraffes are extinct in much of their historic range, and currently some subspecies are classified as endangered. Habitat destruction and encounters with farmers have caused giraffe populations to decline over the years; its now estimated that there are fewer than 100,000 giraffes in the wild.
