History
Flamingoes are thought to have appeared around 30 million years ago, and they are related to storks, herons, and ibises, all long-legged birds that live near water. Scientists have long struggled to classify flamingoes because they share traits with such a wide variety of other birds. They have bone structures similar to storks, egg composition like herons, and behavior patterns resembling those of geese. This flurry of confusing traits led taxonomists to create a separate order for flamingoes, making them the only family in their order. There are five distinct flamingo species within the family.
