History
The history of the cheetah is storied and complex. Civilizations as old as the Sumerians and Egyptians tamed Cheetahs and used them for hunting. Even William the Conqueror tamed and hunted with cheetahs. Native to Africa and Asia, cheetahs have diminished populations on both continents. In fact, the Asian subspecies lives only in Iran and is considered critically endangered. The African species are listed as vulnerable, with declining numbers dropping below 10,000. Land use changes due to farming have harmed cheetah populations, as has hunting, both legal and illegal. Conservation efforts abound, however, in an attempt to stabilize cheetah populations. Efforts including farmer education and habitat restoration.
