In 1981, the world of motorsports felt a seismic shift with the introduction of Group A touring car races. These races brought the thrill of competition to the streets, featuring vehicles strikingly similar to those you’d see parked in your neighbour’s driveway. This familiarity ignited an incredible popularity for Group A, culminating in the All Japan Touring Car Championship (JTC) launch in 1985.
- Car manufacturers quickly recognized the promotional power of these races, leading to a surge in participation. The result? It was a spectacular success that captivated audiences and transformed the motorsports landscape. Group A was divided into three divisions based on engine displacement, each offering its unique brand of excitement.
- The largest displacement class saw the R32 Skyline GT-R igniting fierce battles for top positions. Meanwhile, the smallest displacement class, up to 1600cc, witnessed a thrilling fight for victory. In this class, no single make dominated. Instead, teams piloted cars from Toyota and Honda, creating an electrifying competition.
- Toyota made its mark on the JTC by introducing the AE86 Levin. Debuting in 1983 with front-engine rear-wheel drive, the AE86 earned praise as an ideal entry-level vehicle for motorsports. However, when Toyota remodelled the commercial-type Levin in 1987, they switched gears in Group A to the AE92. This model boasted a 2WD front-engine front-drive setup powered by a fuel-injected naturally aspirated inline-four engine.
The TOM’s team and numerous others took the AE92 to the track. Over ten cars joined the fray, making the AE92 a common sight at JTC events.
- Two key players in the 1989 season were the Hoshino/Misaki and Suzuki/Nitta teams, piloting AE92 Levins numbered 6 and 7, respectively. In the six races held that year, the Hoshino/Misaki team secured 2nd and 3rd place in the up-to-1600cc class, finishing 8th overall to add an extra layer of excitement to the season.
- The Toyota Levin AE92 underwent another redesign in the latter half of the 1991 season, aligning with changes to the commercial model. It continued to thrill JTC fans as the star player in the up-to-1600cc class until it passed the baton to its successor model, the AE101. The AE92’s legacy is one of intense competition, street-level connection, and testament to Toyota’s commitment to motorsports excellence.
