McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1XV592/L, RAF No.111 Squadron, Leuchars, Fife,Scotland, Late 1970sAlthough some may argue that the American McDonnellDouglas F-4 Phantom was an acquisition which wasalmost forced upon the Royal Air Force during the late1960s, Britain would soon come to appreciate therugged qualities of this magnificent aeroplane andaccept that it presented them with a hugely capablemulti-role platform. McDonnell Douglas F-4K (FG.1)Phantom XV592 had the distinction of beingthe last aircraft produced for the RoyalNavy and it would go on to serveaboard HMS Ark Royal in the markingsof No.892 Naval Air Squadron (as they knewthey would be the last unit, they added a largeblack Omega symbol to their aircrafts tails),until the withdrawal of Britains last big carrierat the end of the 1970s. As with the rest of theremaining Royal Navy Phantoms at that time,XV592 would later be transferred to thecare of the Royal Air Force at Leucharsin Scotland, where she would performan air defence role, patrolling the vastexpanses of the North Sea, challengingthe frequent Soviet incursions into British airspace. Her RAF camouflage scheme could hardlybe more different from the extra dark sea grey and whitecolours she adopted during her Navy days, presenting themighty Phantom in a much more sinister manner, even thoughboth proved incredibly popular with enthusiasts. Indeed,Phantom FG.1 XV592 is fortunate to have worn two of themost iconic British Phantom schemes during the servicehistory of this Anglicised American aviation classic.
